About Us

An independent center for ethics, knowledge, and justice in healthcare.

The Institute of Bioethics in Albania is an independent research center committed to advancing ethical thinking and public policy for a more just, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system. Founded by experts with international experience in bioethics, law, medicine, and health policy, the Institute aims to become a regional reference point for the analysis of complex issues related to life, technology, and public health.

Our Vision

To build an Albania where bioethics is not just theoretical, but becomes a decision-making practice in healthcare, technology, and public policy.

What We Do

  • We conduct interdisciplinary ethical research

  • We develop policy and strategic guidance

  • We foster public dialogue and professional development

  • We promote equity, dignity, and ethically sensitive care

Why Bioethics?

From genetic technologies to end-of-life care, from e-pharmacy to medical tourism, we believe that every innovation requires deep ethical reflection. In the absence of clear rules, we risk undermining safety, justice, and public trust in the healthcare system.

History of the Institute

From a personal vision to a national mission for ethics in healthcare.

The Institute of Bioethics in Albania was born from the personal and professional journey of our founder, an Albanian bioethics expert in health research and policy. With a combined 12 years of combined experience in research, including healthcare settings and bioethics - such as with Harvard University, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom - she chose to bring her knowledge and commitment back to her country of origin.

Having identified significant gaps in the ethical governance of healthcare in Albania, from the absence of regulatory frameworks for assisted reproduction to the lack of ethical protocols for palliative care, she created a platform for an independent center that would be neither academic nor governmental, but rather a critical and mediating actor in building a more responsive, inclusive, and equitable healthcare system.

Key Milestones:

  • 2022: Initial initiative to establish the Institute and design project concepts for Albania

  • 2024: Creation of the independent research platform and collaboration with national and international actors

  • 2025 and beyond: Development of projects on palliative care, e-pharmacy, mental health, embryo ethics, and genomic technologies
